Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her creative and artistic side when she was a young girl due to her aunt Denise. The aunt she had was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful vehicle to engage in activism. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to direct a movie about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her college. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home of a particular Jury member. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from the college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
